ABOUT THE EVENT
In September, the entire globe will be focused on the Pittsburgh Summit.
Recent debate has centered on the best ways to showcase Pittsburgh to a national and international audience. This is an opportunity to create a lasting impression on the world by illuminating Pittsburgh's patchwork quilt of neighborhoods whose spirit and proud heritage are rooted in a blue-collar, can-do attitude.
Whether it's maintaining a little league field, volunteering at a soup kitchen or cleaning up one of the city parks, Pittsburghers are always ready to pitch in and help. The initiative, Pittsburgh Day of Service, is an opportunity for the people of Western Pennsylvania to focus energies and efforts toward the greater good of neighborhood improvements through community service projects.
This county-wide volunteer and community service project will be held on Friday, September 25 at four locations outside of the city core: Schenley Park, North Park, South Park and Settlers Cabin.
Pittsburgh Day of Service falls in line with President Obama's recent launch of "United We Serve." The day is a commitment to the renewal of our communities, and it calls on the city to mobilize efforts to share the patchwork quilt that is Pittsburgh to the world.
We're encouraging community organizations, educational institutions, corporate employers, volunteer organizations and community members to participate. The goal of the project is to create an annual community service event beyond a one-and-done project for the Pittsburgh Summit.
